1-3 weeks prior to surgery you will begin your full low fat pre op diet.

Pre-op Diet Guidelines

WEEK 1: Before surgery complete a high protein liquid diet consisting of 3 high protein/low carbohydrate drinks per day and plenty of calorie free/low calorie clear liquids such as: water, broth, sugar free Jell-O, Crystal Light, no calorie Poweraide

The day before surgery consume clear liquids only such as: water, broth, Jell-O, crystal light, no calorie poweraide, low sugar Gatorade and tea.

WEEK 2: Advance diet to a high protein liquid diet. During this week you can consume any liquids consumed during week 1 and you can add thicker full liquids such as: Meal Replacement Shakes, sugar free pudding, tomato soup, blended cream soups and oatmeal/grits/cream of wheat that has been blended with skim milk to make it smooth and pourable.

WEEK 3 & 4: Consume a Soft diet consisting of: chicken/tuna/egg salad, grilled/baked fish, canned fruits, well cooked/soft vegetables, applesauce, cottage cheese, string cheese and refried beans with melted cheese. Also, you can consume any full or clear liquids during this phase, but they should be high protein and low carbohydrate only.

WEEK 5 AND Beyond: Consume a regular diet as tolerated with a focus on high protein foods and vegetables. Limit the white starches and the liquid calories as these can hinder weight loss. Review your Patient Education Handbook in detail to learn more about how to eat to achieve your weight loss goals.
